At the Higashi-Honganji Buddhist temple in Kyoto, our tour guide, Johnnie Hillwalker, told us that this rope, made from human hair, was used to carry wood from the mountains to this location to build the temple. As many of Japan's structures are made from wood, it was commonplace for buildings to burn down. The temple burnt to the ground numerous times, so the one that you can see today is not all that old.
